The Science Days (“Tieteen päivät”) – event was organized in Tampere Hall by the Tampere Universities together with Aamulehti, the Council of Tampere Region, Police University College, City of Tampere and the Tampere Hall on January 25th -26th 2019. The event is organized yearly and this year the event reached a record audience. Approximately 1,000 high school students visited the event on Friday. On Saturday, the event was open for general public and nearly 3,000 people interested in science visited the Science Days. The theme of the Science Days was courage. Courage was discussed though different disciplinaries including artificial intelligence, urban planning, population activism, genetic engineering, bioethics, brain research and work community dynamics.
The CoEBoC had a workshop concerning cell culturing at the event. The audience had a chance to use a microscope and take a look at the beating stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. In addition, the audience was able to see how hydrogels, material used in three-dimensional cell culturing, are produced and handled. The workshop was a success, from time-to-time there were many people of all ages queuing for the microscope. In addition, it was proven that our stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes are quite robust! They survive well in the Tampere Hall over a weekend and they do not mind even though hundreds of people are looking at them by the microscope!
